DON NEGUS: Shaheen dealership growing

Sunday, May 30, 2010 8:06 AM EDT

How do you take an underperforming auto dealership in central Michigan and, over the space of two short years, turn in into a regional leader in sales and service?

Apparently, you put it in the hands of the Shaheen family, who have been selling Chevrolets and winning rave reviews at Shaheen Chevrolet in Lansing and at Team One Chevrolet in Charlotte, for more than 40 years and 25 years, respectively.

"We knew Mt. Pleasant was a unique and stable community," said Chris Pratt, executive manager at Shaheen Buick/Pontiac/GMC Truck/Cadillac Inc., "and we were particularly excited about the opportunity to become a Cadillac dealer."

The Shaheen family took over the dealership in Mt. Pleasant on April 1, 2008, brought in nearly an entirely new team of sales and service professionals, and within two years, achieved General Motors' highest rating for customer satisfaction - 100 percent. While other Michigan dealerships were struggling, Shaheen continued to grow, and at the present time, sales are considerably ahead of last year.

Ask what distinguishes Shaheen from other area dealerships and Pratt is quick to answer: "Strength of inventory and customer service. We have the right inventory, we have the right market and we know how to take care of our customers."

GM continuously surveys customer satisfaction and Shaheen consistently scores at the top.

"All of our personnel are trained to 100 percent GM standards, and our technicians exceed those standards," Pratt adds.

General Motors' $865 million first quarter profit was a dramatic reversal from the massive $6 billion loss in the same period last year. New models like the Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan helped lift GM's North American Operations to a $1.2 billion profit compared to a $3.4 billion loss in the year earlier quarter.

"Over the next few years, Buick will be revising its image by producing five all-new models," said Pratt. "By 2013, only the Regal will be kept from the present lineup."

One vehicle that Pratt is particularly excited about is the much-heralded GMC Granite, a sub-compact SUV that GM plans to take from concept car to the showroom floor in the not-too-distant future.

When brought to market, the Granite will be the smallest GMC vehicle ever, but has been optimized to feel much larger. A full two feet shorter than the Terrain compact-crossover, the Granite's interior was designed to be spacious and flexible. GM calls it an "urban utility vehicle" that will stretch people's idea about what a GMC can be.

"In the meantime," says Pratt, "the 2010 GMC Terrain provides plenty of excitement on its own. It combines crossover benefits with SUV capabilities, including an estimated 32 highway mpg, precise, responsive handling and a smooth, quiet ride."

A short time ago, it looked like GM might remove Cadillac from Shaheen's product line and the dealership nearly went to arbitration in order to keep the storied brand in its showroom. But GM relented and Shaheen will continue to be mid-Michigan's sole Cadillac dealer.

"We were relieved because, frankly, we feel that Cadillac sets the industry standard for luxury and excellence in automotive engineering," Pratt said. "In fact," he continues, "our goal here at Shaheen is to make sure that each and every customer, no matter which of our vehicles they choose, be treated like a Cadillac owner."

Shaheen Buick/Pontiac/GMC Truck/Cadillac Inc. is at 116 N. Mission Street in Mt. Pleasant.
